Man cuts off wife’s fingers as punishment for pursuing higher education.

I got this shocking story from bbc.com, where human rights groups in Bangladesh have demanded a severe punishment for the husband of a young woman who cut off most of her right hand.

This husband of hers, Rafiqul Islam, 30, says he attacked her because she pursued higher education without his permission. Chopping of almost her entire right hand is hence a deserving reward for her “crime”.  And how did he do this?  Tied up his 21-year-old wife, Hawa Akther Jui,  then taped her mouth and cut off the five fingers.

A while after the incident, it is reported that doctors said the fingers could be re-attached within six hours but then, the husband refused to give them. After that time, another of his relatives threw the fingers in a dustbin such that when they were finally recovered, it was too late.

The lady,  Ms Akther, who is still recovering at her parents' house says she can’t live anymore with her husband - who is now in police custody –

How challenging interventions on women empowerment are!!

This incident sheds lights on the numerous acts and degrees of acts of domestic violence targeting educated women worldwide. Why can’t women just be humans?

Can someone tell me why?
